2015 Reflection

CAN YOU BELIEVE IT'S ALMOST THE END OF THE YEAR!! As it's my last year for Pt England. Why not end it off with a reflection about 2015!!

In the beginning of the year, I felt shy and confused. It wasn’t long until the year 8’s went on the leadership camp. The leadership camp gave me the confidence because I was one of the leaders. I had to show the teachers of what I was capable of. What I find satisfying this year was meeting new friends and going team trips such as the Film Festival, Yr7 Rainbows End, Marsden Camp and much more. It was also difficult to stand up in the team and do the mihi or the karakia.

If I was to grade myself out of 10 for being awesome. It would be.....9.01 because i’ve showed the juniors to be a good role model. These are some of the things I’ve contributed for Team 5 this year. I’ve tried the mihi, karakia, fundraisers and I was also a house captain. Next year I would study more because this year I didn’t get much homework. I would really like my teacher next year to know that I like to play sports, games and I love to spend time with my family.

I want my future teacher to help me with almost everything they know. I like to learn new subjects, sports and even animals.  This is a blog post to help you understand some of the things. Here

Poetry

Walking into this rusty room
the cheapest I can afford
Waking up in the morning
I was very very Bored.......
The room was Dark
When I walked through the door
I notice the moldy walls
And the broken draws
The ceiling was dark brown
The parts were starting to fall down
I held my nose
cause I couldn’t bare the smell
It was so bad I wanted to go
mysterious room, must grab the broom.
Sweep the floor,
sweep the draws wishing to restore
this lovely house that used to be poor

Term 4 Is Here!!!

Can you believe it!! Term 4 is here. We kicked off the term with our topic......‘Survivor.’ I wondered what is Survivor?

Today, in immersion assembly, Mr Burt shared with us a new word called adaptation. Adaptation is changing yourself into the environment. He also showed us a short film about a fiapoko parrot not adapting to this world. I felt drowsy because I wasn't used to waking up early.

First teams 1-4 did their items. Then it was team 5’s item. They had a competition about who can eat noodles the quickest with chopsticks. They all rapidly picked up the plate and ate.

At the end, Miss Clark was victorious because she’s been using chopsticks since she was three years old. But Miss Ingrim used forks in London and Miss Hockly used forks as well but when she moved to Japan she had to adapt and use chopsticks. They also surprised us with artworks of superheroes.

Finally when the immersion assembly ended. I had a clearer vision of what we are going to learn this term.

Let The Race Begin

We have to write about what perspective we want to write about. I picked the person who came second place.

When I took one step out of the bus, there were camera lights flashing at my face. As I entered the stadium, I could see some of the other runners getting changed. I could hear my name in the some of the interviews.

First I slowly walked onto the rough track. Then I started to warm up. I was extremely keen because the crowd was cheering my name.

Then I saw my rivals getting into their starting position. I rapidly jogged to the starting line and formed myself into my starting position. Clearly the other competitors were nervous too as I could smell their body odour wafting off their bodies.

Next the gun made a loud shrieking BANG! I took off like a rocket. I could feel sweat flowing down my neck and my heart was beating like a drum.

After that I was in the last ten metres of the sprint. My only perspective was the finish line until this tall muscular man went speeding past like the speed of a Lamborghini. When I went past the finish line, I kept my chin up and congratulate the others for the race.

Finally the race was over. I went to stand on the podium, when I heard my national anthem. I knew I represented my country and my family.

Explanation Writing: How To Prevent Yourself From Being Sick

In class, we are learning about Explanation Writing. We have to write about how to prevent yourself from getting sick
_____________________________________________________________
Do you ever get sick of being sick? Well, then you came to right place. I am going to explain to you three different ways of preventing yourself from being sick. If you pay attention to what I am going to say in the next three paragraphs. You’ll be in great shape during the winter season.

One of the easiest ways of staying healthy is eating a balanced range of food. This means eating from the 5 food groups with a focus on fruits and vegetables. If you do that then your body will receive all the nutrients it needs to be in the best condition to fight off invading germs.

There is also one different way you can prevent yourself from getting sick it is not share food and drinks with other people. This means don’t eat after someone's taken a bite from your sandwich. It can spread germs into you body and make you sick. Don’t drink someone else’s beverage after they've sipped it. Especially if they've sipped it from a straw. Don’t lick, bite or sip from anyone's food or beverage.

The last prevention from getting sick is being careful of touching doorknobs. This means watching out for doorknobs with germs and other dirty things. If you do this then you’ll be clean and you won’t get sick. Use hand sanitizer after and before you've touched a doorknob.

If you eat a balanced range food, don’t share food and drinks and being careful of touching doorknobs. If you do all three preventions, you will be healthy and clean. You will be also have the nutrients to fight the bacteria that's in your body. Also Have A Shower Daily And Keep Warm. Keep Yourself Healthy And You Can Live A Long Happy Life.

Reality Trip

    Reality Trip
There was 5 New Zealanders that went to Sri Lanka, there names are Stephanie, Kieran, Peter, Stevie and Anna. The documentary is about what it's like in other countries and what they do on a daily basis. They experienced a lot of challenging work. They had to pluck tea leaves. They have to pluck 18 kilos per day. But they only plucked 4-5 kilos in 8 hours.

The most shocking part is plucking 18 kilos everyday. It will take a long time to get the hang of it. If they don’t get 18 kilos, they won't survive. The mothers and their daughter pluck 60 kilos in 8 hours. They probably get paid over 4000 rupees which is probably 30 New Zealand Dollars. They have to stand for 8 hours.

At the end of the day, they went to weigh in. But they only got 4 kilos. They got 480 rupees, in New Zealand money it was $4.80. If they pluck 4 kilos for whole week they could get small money. All the mothers bring their daughters everyday to pluck. Thats going to keep on going and going until one of them gets a scholarship or they get lucky and go to somewhere.
_________________________________________________________________________

For the past few weeks we have been watching a show called Reality Trip. They go to other places and see what they have to do everyday.

Maths Word Problem, Talk Moves

This is what I did with Miss Peato today. We did a word problem. We are learning about percentages, fractions and decimals.

Inference Activity 2

KEY into evaluation LEVEL ONE SET 2
SHORT TEXTS fiction
Evaluation requires the skills of reorganisation and inference. Answers must come from the information in the story. Look for keywords. Consider the writer’s intent.
PRACTISE
ITEM 4 THE POOL
“Don’t get in that end of the pool - it's slippery!" Phil‘s father called from the garden.
The new smooth paint was gleaming bright blue beneath the sparkling water of the pool.
Kids were jumping in at the deep end, splashing, laughing and calling out to each other. Kane was going toward the gently sloping end of the pool. He didn't like jumping in; he liked to walk in and get wet slowly. He entered the water and stood with it lapping around his ankles. He moved forward until the water was nearly at his knees. With his next step his feet went from under him and he fell backwards onto the hard blue concrete.

a. Who was Phil's father calling to? Kane
Why do you say that? Because Kane was going towards the sloped end of the pool
b. Why do you think Kane didn't take notice of Phil’s father? Because the kids were laughing and calling out to each other.

ITEM 5 SPIN DRYER
In a strong wind, the revolving clothesline would spin round and round. When Ray’s cousin Shelley was visiting, she found it funny to see a pair of trousers or socks moving around on the ‘outdoor spin dryer'.
To a seven year old this sort of clothesline was an excellent way to have fun. One person could hold onto any part of the line, tuck their legs up, and be pushed around by another.
However, during that morning a large wash had just been hung on the line - it would be ages before the line would be clear. Deciding they couldn't wait, they spent some time spinning around on the line before lunch anyway.
It wasn‘t until that evening when Shelley had gone, that Ray's mother started folding the newly washed clothes and discovered that one leg of her pyjama pants was now longer than the other.
a. What is meant by the 'outdoor spin dryer'? Its a clothesline spinning outdoor.
b. How do you think one pyjama leg became Longer than the other? The strong wind probably blew the pyjama so hard, one of the pyjamas leg came off.

ITEM 6 NEAT TRICK
When the doctor told Jay that it would take at least four weeks for his leg to heal after the accident, he groaned. When he realised what he would be missing, he wanted to cry.
it had all gone wrong. Now, instead of being the star of his team, he would have to watch the soccer finals from the sideline. If only he hadn't told his friends he could steer his bike with his feet. With both feet on the handlebars he didn't have much control as he built up speed. It wasn't that steep. lt was just that he hadn't seen the brick that had fallen off someone’s trailer.
a. What was Jay going to be missing?
Jay was going to be missing the soccer finals.
b. What do you think caused the accident?
The brick that came off someone's trailer.
_________________________________________________________________________________

This is another inference activity. Inferencing is reading between the lines. You have to use the clues within the text that the author didn't imply. You have to use your prior knowledge to help you find out what the answer is.

Tamaki College Year Nine Talk

Today, Six Year Nines from Tamaki College came to our school. They used to come to our school, they're names were Uili, Wyatt, Brodie Jack, Gloria, Lisia and Taamai. They came with a teacher called Miss Maul. She asked questions to the six people. One of the questions were, "Is it different from year eight. They answered some decent answers. They even talked about the uniforms. The junior students and senior students have different uniforms. After they finished, they gave out books about Tamaki College and an enrolment.

Term 2 Highlights

My three highlights for term 2 is.....
1. Soccer tournament at Sacred Heart College.
The reason I picked this is because it was a very fun day and Miss Va'afusanga said "That was probably the best soccer team that Point England has ever taken to a soccer tournament." We came third in our pool and came sixth out of the whole tournament.
2. Inquiry, Tinkering Tools and Toys
I picked this because it was fun going into groups, making presentations and creating my project.
3. Basketball Kiwi sport
Basketball this term was fun. Melak was a great coach, I had fun playing games and instructions such as Pivot, Shooting and Dribbling.

My 2 things I will be improving next term is moving up a new level in reading. I will also be trying new sports. Before the year ends I want to make sure I get into a college and join at least 10 sports this year.

WELL WISHES FOR ALL FOR THE HOLIDAYS :-)

Paraphrasing - Cipher Wheel

1.Chop out some strips of paper.
 2.  They should be each 1 centimeter wide the other should be 30 centimetres long
 3. Get the scissors and cut out small pieces of sticky tape
 4. To create one long strip of paper, use small pieces of tape to attach the fours strips together
5.  At the end of long strip of paper, put down  ‘START’. You have to write ‘START’ on the left end of the cipher wheel.
6. Get the sticky tape and tape the end ‘START’ of
the strip of paper just underneath the letters ‘START’ on the wheel.
7. Wind the strip gently around the cipher wheel so the sides of the paper just touch each other. Tape down the end of the strip of paper onto cipher wheel.
Today in literacy, we were learning about paraphrasing. Paraphrasing is when you read a story and re-tell it in your own words. Paraphrasing is good because if you read a book and re-tell it in your own words, then you understand what the book is really about.

My World War 1 Chant

Me, Jordan, Iisa, Rebekah and Rave made this chant
Chant:
Left, Left, Left Right Left, Left, Left, Left Right Left, Left, Left, Left Right Left!

In 1914
People were fighting
Men were sad, Some were glad. People were also mad.
Bayonets, Bullets and torches
were also used in their marches
Shooting, crying, saving lives, was the rest of my life. Finally, I am back home, here in my safe zone.

This is the end of the chant,

Next time will you chant with us?

Mr Burt WW1 Explanation

Today, Mr Burt came to talk about the technology in WW1. He was talking about if technology is good or bad. He was also talking about how his grandfather and Mrs Flavelle's grandfather were in the war. His grandfather was the first ever to have a normal bicycle. There four words that spell MAIN. He only talked about M, which is Militarism.

Militarism  is when, for an example. When there is two kids in the playground and they're both hitting each other. They start to push each other and talk badly to each other. That is what Militarism means. Germany and the British used lots and lots of money to buy technologies such as Ships, Planes and Tanks. They wasted lots and lots of money just to trying to beat each other
There was one ship called the dreadnought that the Germans made. Then New Zealand made a plane that had a machine gun at the top, soon after the Germans made a plane that can turn very sharply. Then they made a tank. 3 months after the Germans a big tall silly tank. It was big and heavy but it was so slow.

ANZAC Memorial - World War 1

Every year there is a event on the 25th of April(ANZAC Day). This is a special year because it's been 100 years since the world war 1. It is all about the soldiers who fought for our country.  At the front of the museum there is a big stone which is called Cenotaph. ‘Lest we forget’. ANZAC is an acronym, ANZAC is short for Australia, New Zealand, Army, Corps.

As I sat and pondered about the soldiers who fought in the war.
It must’ve been a lot of yelling, screaming, shooting, blood, death, panicking and a lot bravery. While I was looking out on the small field which had thirty crosses on them. It was quite emotional because there was a lot of people who sacrificed their lives for our country.

Its a travesty to see your dad or a friend to die in battle and its bit harsh to see kids out a dad. I would be miserable and grateful if my great great great grandparents were in the war because I would be sad because he might’ve died in the war and I would be grateful for sacrificing his life for us. I felt a little shocked because of all those distraught families who were waiting for five years.

Using Commas

Using commas

The fish and chips, which Mum had picked up on her way home from town, tasted delicious.

In the sentence above, the words in between the two commas give us extra information.  These words could be left out and the sentence would still make sense.

In the story below there are some groups of words that give extra information.  Your task is to put commas (,) around the extra information.  The first pair of commas has been put in for you.

As soon as the bell rang Rawiri, who couldn’t wait to read his new comic book, raced out the door. When he got home, he found to his surprise a police car parked in the driveway. Rawiri’s mother, who had been out shopping had arrived home to find the bathroom window smashed and many of their belongings missing.  Their house had been burgled, Rawiri couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw the state of his room,  his comic books which he’d left neatly stacked were scattered all over the floor.  His piggy bank in which he’d put most of his pocket money had been smashed and left lying in pieces on the floor.  But the worst thing of all was that his rugby ball the one signed by Jonah Lomu was gone, Rawiri sat down and cried.

Hokule'a Animation

This term, I have been doing a animation. This animation is about the hokulea waka drifting pass the beach of Point England. Yesterday, the wonderful people of the hokule'a and hikianalia came to the shores of Point England beach. So we had to do a assignment which is to draw a waka drifting pass the beach.

Polyfest

In the polyfest, the three things that I liked about polyfest was the Cultural stages. My favourite of them all are the Samoan stage. Simply because of my culture.

My second thing I like about Polyfest is..... the food. At polyfest there are over 20 stalls of food at polyfest. My favourite of them all are the pineapple ice cream and the chopsuey.

Last thing is the family. I really like polyfest because its a place where families have fun and enjoy the dances.

It Says - I say - And So....

It Says – I Say – And So…

Name:Faaiua

The following graphic organizer helps you to find information in a text and put it together with what you already know to come up with a complete answer.

Question
It says...
I say...
So...
Which of the girls is the most adventurous?

Taking chances like that was a real Hazel thing to do.

People who takes chances are  more adventurous
Hazel is the most adventurous.
What were the girls feeling inside the butchers.

The girls yelped and grabbed each other, They stood still, hearts thudding, not making a sound.
People who grab each other, stand still, hearts beating and people not making sound are scared.
Therefore both of the girls are scared
Do you think the cat was a wild cat?

But there on the counter was a cat, pacing up and down, purring.
A wild cat won’t be purring and pacing up and down.
Therefore it is not a wild cat.
Why did Louisa smile.

She must have gone straight home, without flipping coins this time. For the first time all afternoon, Louisa Smiled
Because of how Hazel got scared and we thought she was more adventurous.
So she smiled because of how Hazel got scared
